The Librarian smiled. The floor around us shifted and reconfigured into seating. I plopped down in what looked like a chair. It immediately adjusted to my posture and weight. ” I wonder if it does massages?” I said. It did, gently vibrating and suddenly it felt like gentle hands messaging my shoulders.
Dallas dropped down into the one next to me. “Oh yeah, this is nice. I wonder if it does beer?” He waited expectantly. “Guess not.”
The rest of the gang got seated, and again the giant naked lady sat cross legged on the floor. “I greet you people of Sol!” she said “We have been watching you for some time.” she looked around at all the squishy little humans around her. ” We have been assessing your activities, your strengths, and your weaknesses, since before you left your planet. You have been the quickest race of sentient beings ever to reach your local gate, achieving in tens of thousands of your years what takes others millions. ” She paused dramatically. “We would like to find out why.”
A murmur came up amongst the confused crowd. “Whats all this about?” Dallas asked me.
” The Library thinks that the human race was somehow modified to evolve faster then anything else on the planet.” I went back to watching the Librarian.
“Please do not be alarmed. We are sure that you are as interested in finding out why as we are. We know that your ship is a research vessel containing many laboratories, and the Library is willing to help with any upgrades to your labs as you desire to make them all more efficient.” Several doorways suddenly opened in unison. “We also are opening up our research stations so that you may query the Library for information. This area will remain open to your ship at all times while you are here.”
The captain stood up and she smiled at him. “Yes, Captain Suzuki?”
“What kind of life form are you?”
” Nothing like you have dreamed of. I am sentient, but I am not ‘evolved’. I have been created by the library as a communication device. I can assume any form deemed necessary to carry out whatever functions the Library needs of me. I am autonomous and capable of intelligent thought and self determination.”
” Will we meet any other life forms while we are here?’
” Unlikely. It is protocol to keep species separated while in the Library. There have been incidences where gestures and sounds, even colors have been mistaken as signs of aggression and sparked galactic wars. We prefer this not to happen because of anything done here. Your particular galaxy has a “Galactic Council” that oversees the introduction of new life forms and mediates aggression, and yes, they are about as effective as any council on your planet has been.”
The Q&A continued, but I was drifting off on my relaxing chair hands, almost asleep. Suddenly Dallas slapped my arm. ” I’m bored! C’mon man, I’ll give you the tour!” I reluctantly left my new chair friend and followed. The Librarians eyes followed us as we left, but she continued to answer questions. We stepped through a doorway and into a hall.
The Librarian was there waiting for us.
Scared the crap out of both of us.
“I really wish you would not do that!” Dallas said, hand to his heart.
I was looking at her, and back down the hall where I could still hear her talking. I was confused.
“Murray. I need to talk with you.” She almost looked worried. ” I have gone through your shipboard records and it says you were once a soldier.”
“Lots of soldiers on board ma’am.”
“None with your particular skill set.”
“What the hell is she talking about?” Dallas asked me.
I sighed.
“Alice?”
“I’m sorry, Murray. It was the Captain who told me to share it with the library! I had no choice” Alice said in my ear
Guess the cat is out of the bag.
” I was born a ‘Red Hand’ ” I said.
I could see the look of confusion on his face.
“The Red Hand of God.”
I could see the look of confusion on his face.
I sighed again.
“I am a genetically enhanced and modified super-soldier specifically created to be a cold blooded psycho killer, master of weapons, brilliant strategist, and almost invincible”
I could still see the look of confusion on his face.
“They really screwed up on the cold blooded psycho part”
